We are coming home… to the city where Dr. Nelson Adams (108th NMA President) launched Walk a Mile with a Child in 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia. Join us and show Atlanta that NMA convention attendees, sponsors, exhibitors, guests, families and children not only talk the talk, but we walk the walk. The event is always free and open to convention attendees and the Metro Atlanta community. We have surprises, demonstrations, giveaways, educational and fun-filled activities for all ages. We have again partnered with Mentoring in Medicine – the outstanding hands-on program that promotes and ignites an interest in health and science, the Auxiliary to the National Medical Association’s Project Sun which encourage healthy living and goal setting, and Atlanta Medical Association, and Georgia State Medical Association,  among others.

The Walk a Mile with a Child planning committee has lots of surprises planned for our 15^th annual event; however, mums the word for now… Stay Tuned!

The House of Delegates (HOD) is the legislative body of the National Medical Association (NMA). During the HOD sessions at the Annual Convention, the elected Delegates of the Association meet to conduct the business of the NMA. During the 3 days that the HOD is in session, the HOD will receive and act upon the reports of the Board of Trustees, HOD Councils, HOD Reference Committees and Officers of the Association. In addition, the election of the General Officers of the Association takes place within the House of Delegates. The House of Delegates may meet in Open, Closed, or Executive Session. All members of the NMA may attend the Open Sessions of the HOD, but only Delegates have the right to vote in the deliberations of the HOD. To be eligible to be a Delegate for a House of Delegates meetings, an individual must have been a dues paid member of the NMA in the previous year. Delegates are selected by the State Societies and Sections who submit names for credentialing/registration to the NMA HOD Office.

Join the President and Board of Trustees Chair as they, along with NMA’s national and local leadership, welcome attendees to the official opening of the Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly. During the opening ceremony individuals of national and international stature whose efforts significantly benefit health and medicine will be recognized with the NMA Scroll of Merit Award. Five other awards are conferred to honor luminaries and medical societies that have demonstrated exemplary leadership. These awards include Practitioner of the Year, Distinguished Service, Meritorious Achievement, and Local Society of the Year. The W. Montague Cobb/NMA Health Institute will honor distinguished members of the medical/health community and the Postgraduate Section will recognize the Top Healthcare Professionals Under 40.

Free and open to all.

The NMA supports and encourages diversity in medicine. The Council on Concerns of Women Physicians (CCWP) was established to address the unique issues, concerns and policies regarding the advancement of women physicians through program implementation and policy development. The CCWP Annual Muriel Petioni, M.D. Award Program has become a highlight event of the NMA Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly. Each year this event is one of the most well attended programs during the convention by both men and women in all medical specialties. Past keynote speakers include: Tamika D. Mallory, Judge Glenda Hatchett, Melissa Harris-Perry, Valerie Jarrett, Anita Hill, Regina King, Judy Smith, Dr. Jocelyn Elders, Donna Brazile, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Patti LaBelle, Dianne Carroll, Angela Bassett, Phylicia Rashad and Maya Angelou. In addition, the Council recognizes women physicians who through clinical practice, research, community service and activism, strive to eliminate health care disparities, provide people of color with quality health care, and address women’s health and professional issues. NMA members can submit nominations for the Council on Concerns of Women Physician Awards, where award recipients are recognized during the awards program.

We officially open the exhibit hall on Sunday at 5:30 pm with a reception that is sure to please everyone—members, fellows, guests, and exhibitors.  Enjoy refreshments, hors d’oeuvres, music, and more!

• Stop by Authors on the Square and meet some of NMA’s multi-talented members. Authors on the Square gives NMA an opportunity to highlight our published authors. Take time to visit with them, discuss their book(s), purchase a book, have it autographed and discover their time management secrets. Look for them in the their new location Booth 723.
• Interact with exhibitors who are eager to discuss/demonstrate new, existing and/or innovative products and/or services.
• Attend informative presentations on the latest research findings or products.

• 125th Anniversary Exhibits! NMA celebrated its 125th anniversary virtually in 2020… although, we are now 127 years old, we will continue to celebrate our rich history. Throughout the convention center and in the exhibit hall, we will display memorabilia from NMA’s 125 years of being the premier voice in the quest for equality, justice and the elimination of disparities in health for African Americans and other minority communities.

Bingo Exhibit Hall Activity Game!

Join in the fun by participating in NMA Bingo to WIN BIG! Exhibitors and attendees can participate at NO COST! Three bingo game cards will be distributed in the Convention Bags, one for each day the Exhibit Hall is open. Attendees will visit exhibitors to have their bingo card stamped by row, across or diagonally until they have reached BINGO! Completed cards need to be dropped at NMA Central each day, and winners will be drawn daily! Must be present to win. The more you play, the more chances to win!

  Illuminating the Urgency of HIV Testing and the Role Physicians Can Play in Helping to End the HIV Epidemic

  This presentation theater will illuminate the current state of HIV in the United States and the sense of urgency necessary to engage and re-engage at-risk communities with HIV testing. It will also emphasize that testing is the entry point to the HIV care continuum and identify barriers to HIV testing, while discussing strategies that physicians can implement to help normalize HIV testing.

  Discussion in the Treatment of Sickle Cell Disease, Moving Beyond Pain as a Primary Target

  Please join us to learn about the underlying pathophysiology of sickle cell disease. We will discuss the pathology of red blood cells sickling, and how this leads to subsequent hemolysis, anemia, and vaso-occlusions. This program will also review the clinical efficacy and safety of the first and only FDA-approved hemoglobin polymerization inhibitor for patients 4 years and older.

  Exploring Disease and Disparities for African Americans Living With Multiple Myeloma

  This program shines a spotlight on racial disparities in the diagnosis and outcomes of multiple myeloma.  Those who attend this program can expect to gain insight into factors that may be responsible for these disparities and will be presented with several approaches that may help address them.

Just bring yourself (and old cover-up/tee shirt) along with a smile and we’ll provide all the materials, snacks, sips and a good time.

The formal installation of the President has become a historic NMA tradition.  The installation of the 123^rd President Dr. Garfield Clunie provides an opportunity to congratulate Dr. Clunie and hear his focus and exciting plans for his presidential year. Renew your own commitment to the practice of medicine, in the NMA tradition, by taking the Oath of Imhotep with your colleagues.
